Ignasi Riera

Ignasi Riera graduated in Architecture in 1989 from the Universidad Politécnica de Catalunya (ETSAB-UPC) and since then has worked intensely in his own projects as well as for renowned local companies, gaining experience in the architecture, urbanism and planning field.

From 1985 until 2004, he worked as an affiliate architect with Miquel Álvarez Trincado. In those years of intense estate development, the housing projects for the principal real estate companies of the country and the planning of the new residential areas were the principal work objectives.

From 2004 until 2009, where he initially was CEO and, subsequently, associated partner in Alonso Balaguer y Arquitectos Asociados, he organized the growth of the studio, leaded and promoted the business to an international level and diversified the projects’ typology, focused in the residential use until then, incorporating large-scale projects and singular buildings to different countries.

Since 2010, co-leads two architect studios, one in Barcelona and another one in Rio de Janeiro, associated with Rosario Portillo and João Pedro Backheuser respectively. Collecting his previous professional experience, his fundamental interests are the territorial development, the urban planning and the new forms of understanding the housings. His work has been object of publications in specialized international press and in magazines of the architect sector, in addition to having received different awards throughout his professional career.

In the academic field, he has been guest teacher in the final degree projects’ correction in the ETSAB and the IAAC, he has participated in international congresses of architects in Valencia and Barcelona as a member of the scientific committee and has done different conferences in cities around the world.

Currently, he’s part of the Spain curator of the 27th Mundial Congress of Architects of the UIA, that will take place in Rio de Janeiro in July 2021.
