B+ABR | Backheuser e riera
B+ABR Backheuser e Riera Arquitetura is an architect studio founded in 2014, as a result of the collaboration between the BLAC and ABR studios that started in 2010.
As of the experience of both members, responsible, among other things, of projects of Olympic Stadiums, residential buildings, educational and corporative, hotels, development projects and planning, B+ABR sees a future of multichannel collaboration, exploring the exchange and symbiosis between the two cultures: the Brazilian and the Spanish.
With a mix team, based in Rio de Janeiro, it has the purpose of stablishing a multidisciplinary practice in different scales and project typologies through a solid relationship of collaboration with the two members, the partners and their team.
Among their most important projects, they highlight the Moinho Fluminense’s retrofit in a Hotel-Boutique and the development of the Rio de Janeiro’s port area, the Orla Conde.
Currently, B+ABR is working in the masterplan’s development and the development project of the Rio’s new racetrack, annexed to the Deodoro’s Olympic Zone.

João Pedro Backheuser
João Pedro Backheuser has a master’s degree in Architecture and Urban Design from the Columbia University (NY/2000), is a specialist in Brazilian Architecture from the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism of Pernambuco (Recife/1997) and Urban Architect from the Universidad Santa Úrsula (RJ/1994). He has specialised in Project Administration from the Getúlio Vargas’ Foundation and in Project Management from the COPPEAD Foundation.
In the academic field, he has been a teacher of Architectonic Projects in the Universidad Santa Úrsula (2001) as well as of Architect and Urbanism Projects in the Universidad Estácio de Sá (2001-2006).
He has been a member of the Conselho Deliberativo del IAB-RJ, Instituto de Arquitetos do Brasil – Rio de Janeiro, (2010/11), Director-President of the Project’s Laboratory Studio X – Rio de Columbia University (NY) and substitute member of the CAU-RJ (Conselho de Arquitetura e Urbanismo – Departamento Rio de Janeiro).
He actively contributed in the technical development of the infrastructures of the city fr the Rio 2016’s Olympic Games and in the technical Organization of some facilities of the Olympic Park.
Currently, he co-leads the B+ABR Architect Studio, in rio de Janeiro along with Ignasi Riera.
This year, he’s the executive director of the 27th Mundial Congress of Architects of the UIA, that will take place in Rio de Janeiro in July 2021.
